IN THE GARDEN
I
ike anyone who works long
hours, Doug Wold and his wife,
Rita McGee, appreciate their
downtime. So when the Seattle-
area painting contractors
renovated their yard, creating a
place to unwind was a priority.
“We wanted a series of rooms with
varying amounts of privacy” but not
absolute isolation, says Doug. The solution
was a “friendly screen” of strategically
placed trees that block objectionable sight
lines with neighbors. Flagstone paving came
next, creating inviting paths and patios
furnished with colorful seating.
Doug wanted a cohesive look to the
landscape, and the rich plantings that
embrace the living spaces help pull it all

deck a “room like feel,” says Doug.
